Is this you?
We wrote this for three kinds of regulated professional. Most people reading this are at least one of them.
You want real clarity on where your own competence boundary actually sits.
Not vague reassurance, the real GMP standard, and a real case showing what happens when that boundary isn't respected.
You're addressing a concern involving a competence or skills gap.
Genuine, evidence-based understanding of how competence concerns are actually assessed, and what remediation genuinely looks like.
You're building a genuinely well-rounded CPD portfolio.
Clinical competence, covered properly, alongside the wider professionalism and probity library.
A coroner found her treatment contributed to a patient's death.
A real, current case, decided in the High Court in 2025. It followed a coroner's Prevention of Future Death report finding that a patient's treatment by a Physician Associate had contributed to her death. The legal challenge argued regulators should impose specific, task-by-task limits on what associates can do. The High Court disagreed, ruling the existing framework, built entirely around recognising and working within your own competence, was lawful. This course explains what that framework actually requires of you, and why the judgment turned on a principle that applies to every regulated professional, not just associates.

What it covers, and why
Course description
A CPD course on clinical competence and patient safety, grounded in a real, current High Court judgment following a coroner's finding, and the actual Good Medical Practice standard on recognising the limits of your competence, not a generic "know your limits" summary.
Why it's relevant
The line between competence and its limits is treated as a real, formal professional standard, with a real, current legal framework behind it. This course explains what that framework actually requires, using a genuine, recent case as its anchor.
How it improves your practice
You'll finish able to explain the real GMP standard on competence, understand how regulators genuinely distinguish a single error from a pattern of incompetence, and recognise what real evidence of remediation actually looks like.
What it covers
The course runs across four modules:
- Why competence boundaries are a real professional standard
- A real, current case, in full, and what the court actually decided
- How regulators actually assess a competence concern
- A practical framework for recognising and responding to your own limits
Who it's for
Any regulated health or social care professional, across every UK regulator. Genuinely relevant whether you're addressing an active concern, or want to understand this properly as routine practice.
