Social Work England CPD

What Social Work England asks of you each year

Quick answer

How many CPD hours do social workers in England need?

Social Work England does not set a number of hours. At annual renewal you declare and record your CPD, reflect on how it has affected your practice, and take part in peer reflection. The quality and honesty of your record matters more than the time spent.

A course gives you the learning, and a certificate naming the course, hours and date gives you something concrete to refer to. The reflection on what changed in your practice must be your own. Check Social Work England’s guidance for the current minimum entries and the peer reflection requirement.

  • CPDrecord your continuing professional development each year at renewal
  • Impactreflect on how your learning has affected your practice
  • Peerinclude peer reflection as part of your annual record
  • 5Professional Standards underpin everything you record

Summarised from Social Work England’s published CPD guidance. Check socialworkengland.org.uk for the current requirements and for how they apply to your registration.

Each year you record your CPD and reflect on its impact on your practice. Ethics and Professionalism give you substantive learning to write about, and Reflection helps you turn it into an honest account.

Questions answered

Social Work England CPD — common questions

The questions social workers most often ask about this curriculum.

How many CPD hours do social workers in England need?

Social Work England does not set a fixed number of hours. At annual renewal you record your CPD, reflect on its impact on your practice and include peer reflection. Check Social Work England’s guidance for the current minimums.

Do these courses count towards my annual CPD record?

They give you learning you can record, with a certificate naming the course, hours and date. The reflection on how it affected your practice is your own, so write it in your own words and check Social Work England’s guidance.

Should I take Ethics or Professionalism first?

Either stands alone. If a specific ethical question such as capacity, consent or confidentiality is on your mind, start with Ethics. If your situation is more about competence, professional judgement, team culture or conduct, start with Professionalism. Together they cover the Professional Standards in depth.

Can these courses help with my reflection?

The Reflection course is built for exactly this. It shows how to structure a reflection, link it to the standards and show what changed in your practice. The reflection itself must be your own.

What’s the difference between the Probity & Honesty courses and Ethics?

Ethics covers the breadth of the Professional Standards. The Probity & Honesty courses go deeper into specific areas: candour, gifts and conflicts, dishonesty, financial integrity and rebuilding trust.

Are these courses suitable if I’m not facing any concern?

Yes. Most social workers who take them are building CPD for renewal or want a refresher on the Professional Standards. If you are facing a live concern, our Social Work England Remediation courses are built for that.

Is there an assessment for each course?

Yes. Each course has short knowledge checks plus a final assessment, with an 80% pass mark to unlock your certificate. Retakes are unlimited.

Can my employer or local authority enrol several people at once?

Yes. We offer team access and bulk pricing, with an individual certificate issued to everyone who completes each course. Contact us for organisation-level enrolment.
