What the GDC asks for across a five-year cycle
How many CPD hours do dentists and dental care professionals need?
Dentists need 100 hours of verifiable CPD over a five-year cycle, with at least 10 hours in any two-year period. Dental care professionals need 75 hours, with at least 5 hours in any two-year period. You also keep a personal development plan and submit an annual CPD statement.
Verifiable CPD means the activity has clear aims and objectives, is relevant to your practice, is quality assured and gives you evidence of completion, such as a certificate. Our certificates name the course, the hours and the date.
- 100hours of verifiable CPD for dentists in a five-year cycle
- 75hours of verifiable CPD for dental care professionals in a five-year cycle
- PDPa personal development plan, linked to the GDC’s development outcomes
- Annualstatement of CPD hours completed, submitted each year
- Topicsrecommended subjects include medical emergencies, legal and ethical issues and complaints handling
Summarised from the GDC’s published enhanced CPD guidance. Check gdc-uk.org for the current requirements and for how they apply to your registration.
What’s going on for you?
Four common situations dentists and dental care professionals building routine CPD are in.
I’m building verifiable CPD for my five-year cycle
The GDC asks for verifiable CPD with a personal development plan. Ethics and Professionalism give you substantive learning, and the topics the GDC recommends include legal and ethical issues and complaints handling.
My practice or group has asked for specific training
Candour, record-keeping, boundaries or communication training requested as part of an employer or governance requirement.
I want a refresher on the Standards for the Dental Team
The Standards’ own wording, applied to dental practice decisions, not a generic ethics framework relabelled.
I want to build reflective practice as a habit
An ongoing discipline that strengthens over successive CPD cycles, not a one-off exercise before the deadline.
What makes our GDC courses different from generic CPD
Built against the Standards for the Dental Team
Every lesson is anchored in the nine principles of the Standards for the Dental Team, not a generic ethics framework relabelled for dentistry.
Written for dental practice
Examples, standards and scenarios are drawn from dental practice, including team working, delegation and care of vulnerable people.
Worked cases, not abstract theory
Courses include multi-step cases that tie the principles to an actual clinical or workplace decision.

GDC CPD — common questions
The questions dentists and dental care professionals most often ask about this curriculum.
How many CPD hours do dentists and DCPs need?
Dentists need 100 hours of verifiable CPD over a five-year cycle, with at least 10 hours in any two-year period. Dental care professionals need 75 hours, with at least 5 in any two-year period. Check the GDC’s guidance for how this applies to your registration.
Do these courses count as verifiable CPD?
Each course has clear learning outcomes, a final assessment and a certificate naming the course, hours and date. The GDC asks you to judge whether an activity meets its verifiable CPD requirements and to link it to your personal development plan, so check the GDC’s guidance for your own case.
Should I take Ethics or Professionalism first?
Either stands alone. If a specific ethical question such as consent, confidentiality or candour is on your mind, start with Ethics. If your situation is more about competence, delegation, team culture or conduct, start with Professionalism. Together they cover the Standards for the Dental Team in depth.
Does the GDC recommend particular CPD topics?
Yes. The GDC recommends subjects including medical emergencies, legal and ethical issues and complaints handling. Our Ethics, Professionalism and Fitness to Practise courses are relevant to the legal, ethical and complaints topics. Check the GDC’s guidance for the current list.
What’s the difference between the Probity & Honesty courses and Ethics?
Ethics covers the breadth of the Standards for the Dental Team. The Probity & Honesty courses go deeper into specific areas: candour, gifts and conflicts, dishonesty, financial integrity and rebuilding trust.
Are these courses suitable if I’m not facing any concern?
Yes. Most dentists and DCPs who take them are building CPD for their cycle or want a refresher on the Standards for the Dental Team. If you are facing a live concern, our GDC Remediation courses are built for that.
Is there an assessment for each course?
Yes. Each course has short knowledge checks plus a final assessment, with an 80% pass mark to unlock your certificate. Retakes are unlimited.
Can my practice or group enrol several people at once?
Yes. We offer team access and bulk pricing, with an individual certificate issued to everyone who completes each course. Contact us for organisation-level enrolment.
We’ll email you when it launches
Usually with an early-access discount for people on the list.
