Questions answered

GMC investigations & remediation — common questions

The questions doctors most commonly search or ask when facing a live concern.

I've received a letter from the GMC, what should I do first?

Contact your medical defence organisation (MDU, MPS, or MDDUS) immediately if you haven't already. Alongside their advice, beginning relevant CPD is a genuine, proactive step, but it doesn't replace professional legal or regulatory advice specific to your case.

Will completing these courses help my GMC case?

They'll give you a genuine, documented account of professional learning relevant to the concern raised, useful supporting evidence for your remediation statement. We can't promise a specific outcome, and we're not a substitute for advice from your defence organisation or solicitor.

What's the difference between a GMC concern, complaint, and formal investigation?

A concern or complaint is typically the GMC's initial review of information received. Not every concern becomes a formal fitness to practise investigation, many are resolved or closed at an early stage. Your defence organisation can explain exactly where you are in the process.

How quickly can I start, and how fast can I get a certificate?

Access is immediate after enrolling. Each course takes roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on the course, so you can realistically complete one and hold a certificate the same day.

What does the GMC actually mean by "insight"?

Insight means genuinely understanding what went wrong, your own part in it, who was affected, and demonstrating concrete change, not simply expressing regret. Our Insight course works through this specific framework, since it's consistently the factor case examiners and MPTS panels weigh most heavily.

Should I complete a course before or after submitting my written response?

Either can genuinely help, but completing relevant courses before you write your response often produces a stronger, more specific account of your insight and remediation than writing first and reflecting afterward.

My concern touches more than one category, what should I do?

This is genuinely common. Review each situation card above that applies to you, most real concerns span more than one area, rather than assuming only one course is relevant.

Do I need a solicitor, or is my defence organisation enough?

Your defence organisation, union, or indemnity provider is usually the right first call and is often sufficient. A solicitor may become relevant for more complex or serious cases, often on your defence organisation's own recommendation.

Should I contact anyone before starting a course?

Yes, if you're facing a live GMC concern, contact your defence organisation, MDU, MPS, or MDDUS, before responding to anything. These courses support your response, they don't replace legal advice.
