Welcome to Clinical Competence (Competence)

Welcome to this course

A real, current case, decided in the High Court in 2025. It followed a coroner’s Prevention of Future Death report finding that a patient’s treatment by a Physician Associate had contributed to her death. The legal challenge argued regulators should impose specific, task-by-task limits on what associates can do. The High Court disagreed, ruling the existing framework, built entirely around recognising and working within your own competence, was lawful.

This course covers clinical competence and patient safety, grounded in that judgment and the actual Good Medical Practice standard, not a generic “know your limits” summary.

By the end of this course you will be able to

  1. Explain the real Good Medical Practice standard on recognising and working within your competence
  2. Understand the real, current legal framework this course is built around, and why it matters to every regulated professional
  3. Recognise how regulators genuinely distinguish a single error from a pattern of incompetence
  4. Apply a genuine, practical approach to recognising and responding to your own limits

Who this is for
