Welcome to Professionalism & Professional Standards for Nurses & Midwives (NMC Professionalism)
Welcome to this course
Our Ethics course covers reasoning through genuine dilemmas, consent, confidentiality, honesty under real pressure. This course covers something different: the standing conduct and discipline that make up the rest of what The Code actually asks of you, competence, workplace culture, everyday conduct, and the wellbeing standard nursing and midwifery have only recently started taking seriously as a professional duty, not just a private matter.
The Code organises itself around four themes, and between our two courses, all four are genuinely covered. Ethics sits mainly in Prioritise People and the candour side of Preserve Safety. This course sits in Practise Effectively, the operational side of Preserve Safety, and Promote Professionalism and Trust, in full.
- Recognise a genuine competence gap and act on it, and delegate safely to healthcare assistants and students
- Build and protect a respectful team culture, and challenge discrimination when you see it
- Raise a concern about a colleague or a system through the right channel, at the right time
- Meet the everyday conduct standard that protects trust, including online
- Recognise your own wellbeing as a professional responsibility, not a private matter
- Explain how professionalism and ethics genuinely overlap, using a real worked case
Who this is for
Any nurse or midwife registered with the NMC, at any career stage, in any setting. Especially relevant if you supervise students or healthcare assistants, if a workplace conduct or culture concern has been raised, or if you’re preparing for revalidation and want CPD that genuinely covers Practise Effectively and Promote Professionalism and Trust, not just ethics content stretched to cover everything.
This course explains professional standards and the reasoning behind them. It is not legal advice and does not replace representation. If a concern has been raised about your conduct, speak to your union or professional indemnity provider before you act.
