Welcome to Effective Communication (Comm)
Welcome to this course
A real, published case: a young woman, assaulted and brought into an emergency department, had a facial wound left uncleaned and a CT scan whose results weren’t yet processed at shift handover. The junior doctor taking over couldn’t hear the bedside handover clearly, and instead of asking, he assumed the wound had already been dealt with. It hadn’t. The failure cascaded through the next handover, and again when the GP was never properly briefed for follow-up.
This course covers professional communication, grounded in that real case and the specific GMC and NMC standards built to prevent exactly this, not a generic “communicate clearly” summary.
- Explain why communication is treated as a real professional standard, not a soft skill
- Recognise the specific points where a real handover commonly fails
- Apply the GMC’s continuity-of-care standard, and the relevant NMC Code standards, correctly
- Use a real, evidence-based structured framework for handover communication
Who this is for
Any regulated health or social care professional who hands over, receives, or coordinates care. This is a genuinely common course, the underlying standard is consistent across GMC, NMC, GDC, HCPC, GPhC, and Social Work England.
This course explains the general standard on professional communication and handover. It is not legal advice. If you’re facing a live concern involving an allegation of this kind, contact your defence organisation, union, or indemnity provider immediately.
